Ives Ensemble (Netherlands)

Founded in 1986 by the Dutch pianist John Snijders, the internationally acclaimed Ives Ensemble consists of a steady pool of seven to fourteen musicians. The ensemble is well known for its performances of non-conducted 20th century chamber music, and in this rare Vancouver appearance will perform a program of works by Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis, Gerald Barry, Christopher Fox and Canadian composer Allison Cameron.

A shape-shifting ensemble from Montreal’s iconic musique actuelle scene, this incarnation of the group will bring together eleven musicians (including many familiar faces from Interference, VNM’s 2005 festival of improvised musics): Marie-Soleil Bélanger, Michel F. Côté, Jean Derome, Guido del Fabbro, Lori Freedman, Joane Hétu, Diane Labrosse, Danielle P. Roger, Pierre Tanguay, Martin Tétrault and Némo Venba. Ensemble Supermusique will perform Michel F. Côté’s music based on a text by George Bataille, an improvised canvas from Jean Derome, Remix/Claude Vivier by Diane Labrosse and an excerpt from Little Métis by Danielle Palardy Roger.

Silvia Mandolini and Brigitte Poulin (Italy/Montreal)

Highly sensitive musicians, Silvia Mandolini (violin) and Brigitte Poulin (piano) are virtuoso performers devoted to the performance of contemporary music. Well known for fostering the creation of new duos for piano and violin, their repertoire includes Canadian and international works, which they play with exquisite balance and intensity. The duo will perform a program of work by Luca Francesconi, Witold Lutoslawski, Giorgio Magnanensi, François Rose and Iannis Xenakis.
